California Nuking Snow

Last minute trip to the Sierras anyone? Brace yourself for unreal snowy scenes as the storm delivers just as forecast…

Now that winter has thankfully returned to the Alps, we might be ready to handle the scenes from the Sierra Nevada mountains in California where it’s absolutely nuking snow.

Mammoth Mountain ski resort has already had more snowfall this winter, recorded 9 January, than it did from the whole of last season with totals over 9 metres at summit and 7 metres at base.

Upper base depth is 5 metres – the first mountain resort worldwide to log it this season.

And, wait for it, up to a metre more of the white stuff is expected at Mammoth in the next few days.

The big wave storm has also hit Kirkwood Mountain, with up to 1.5 metres expected into Wednesday 11 January.

Of course with the heavy snow and wind comes issues with both mountain operations and road access. Mad snow clearing ops are underway to get it under control, but heck will it be good when it opens up…
