CBD for skiers

Is CBD the perfect post-skiing recovery balm?

These three letters are cropping up everywhere. But how much do you actually know about CBD? Do you know the difference between CBD, THC and marijuana?

Have you tried a little self-medication in the form of CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a key active component in the cannabis plant. CBD, unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), does not produce psychoactive effects. I.e. It doesn’t get you high. But it does provide several medicinal advantages.

CBD attaches itself to the receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which are responsible for sending transmissions to the brain and central nervous system. It has been demonstrated to successfully treat several medical ailments such as pain, inflammation, anxiety, eating disorders and even cancer.

CBD and its therapeutic effects are drawing interest beyond the clinical world and – thanks to ‘over-the-counter’ products and it being removed from the list of prohibited drugs by the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2018 – is growing in popularity among athletes.

CBD for skiers

So what about utilising CBD to recuperate after skiing? Turn that muscle pain into muscle gain.

We’re all bound for muscle soreness and fatigue after a day on the mountain, whether it’s your first day out there or you’ve been hitting it hard for years. CBD is an excellent recovery treatment due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities, which assist in calming fatigued muscles. It can also improve circulation and help muscles heal faster, meaning you can hit the slopes again sooner.

There are various ways to take CBD, including topicals, tinctures, edibles and the dry herb vaporiser, a battery-powered device that heats powdered plants until vapour is generated. (No combustion is involved so this smoking intake technique is safer than smoking.) Topical CBD applied straight to the skin’s surface gives focused pain treatment, but CBD consumed sublingually is perhaps the most popular method for instant absorption and effect.

Because CBD is without the ‘high’ you can take it before skiing. Benefits could be that you are relaxed pre-ski. If you tend to get a little nervous, avoiding the jitters and easing tension will help your performance. Some even say that CBD significantly improves focus and mental-clarity, as well as having a drastic impact on mood.

If you still have doubts, it might be reassuring to know that CBD is something many athletes in the sports sector use. Several have publicly backed the use of CBD for rehabilitation, and some have even launched their own CBD brands.
