WINTER 2021 – THE BEST NEW HELMETS AND EYEWEAR
Reducing weight whilst maximising airflow and safety are the stand out trends for next season in ski helmets and eyewear. Here’s a quick round up of the best new lids, sunnies and goggles to get into when next season rolls around.
Lightweight ventilated helmets optimised for heart pumping adventures beyond the ropes are set to become even bigger news next winter with numerous brands getting on board the backcountry lid express.
Look out for new lightweight touring helmets from Cébé (the ‘Versatile’ – a 460g modular helmet with raisable upper shell for max venting), Giro (the ‘Grid’ and women’s ‘Envi’ – two super light, high-end lids with spherical MIPS, specific Ear Pads interface and Julbo (the ‘Peak’ – a 360g in-mold dual certified helmet for skiing and mountaineering).
In addition to the impressive looking Peak, Julbo are launching a new backcountry ski goggle next winter. The innovative new Quickshift 4S with Reactiv photochromic lenses comes with the French brand’s Switch Air System – 2 detachable ‘drop-outs’ at the bottom of the frame that maximise air flow and reduce fogging. Perfect for heart pumping ascents in wild weather and spring skiing.
Back in bounds, it’s all about maximizing safety, airflow and field of view.
Lids-wise, there’s heaps to get your head around including the new Bollé Ryft helmet (a super techie, super safe and super well ventilated option with hybrid shell, Nanogene, MIPS, AVID, Fidlock Boa and wait for it – Shark Vents!), Smith’s new Altus and women’s-specific Vida (two new low-profile, alpine-meets-lifestyle helmets with in-mold construction with Aerocore and Koroyd), Sweet Protection’s affordable new Looper helmet with MIPS tech, and yet more ‘love ’em or hate ‘em’ new visor helmets than ever before.
In terms of goggles, we suggest keeping your 2021 eyes peeled for Bollé’s new Nevada Neo (the brand’s first magnetic goggle), Giro’s super impressive new Contour goggles (with EXV+ tech for max peripheral vision and field of view), the two new additions to Oakley’s Flight line-up (the Flight Path XL and Flight Tracker), POC’s ISPO award-winning Cornea Solar Switch goggles (a world-first solar-powered liquid crystal goggle lens that can change tint between VLT categories 2 and 3), Spy+’s new Marauder goggle (featuring the brand’s patent-pending Deadbolt magnetic lens change system), and two new goggles for smaller faces – Sweet Protection’s new Boondock goggles and Dragon’s PXV 2 with Lumalens colour optimised lenses.
And if you’re partial to mega wicked sounding tech then you’ll want to grab a pair of Zeal’s new Beacon goggles with Observation Deck Technology. Designed to improve vertical peripheral vision, the new Beacon has a 10 degree lens angle inspired by the ‘physics behind structures like air traffic control towers.’
