Struggling to keep up?It’s been quite a crazy 48h in the ski world. A quick re-cap:
▪ The UK announced a change in quarantine rules - from the 15th December 2020, quarantine will reduce from 14-days down to 5 days using the new “Test and Release” system
▪ Ski industry welcomed this news and a boom in bookings to resorts was expected
▪ UK government also announced a new system starting in “early 2021” that could see further reduction to zero-days quarantine if testing works
▪ Ski season looked like it might be back to relatively normal business
▪ However, French president Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday evening that French ski resorts were unlikely to be open in 2020
▪ The full decision is to be announced by the French prime minister within the next week, but Macron suggested it was “impossible” for resorts to open for the xmas and NY holidays. And used the date of 20th January (when French bars and restaurants are able to re-open) as a possible launch date for ski resorts
▪ Macron also said he would consult with his European partners to coordinate start dates for the winter season - so presumably, this means Italian and Austrian resorts are likely to also use mid-jan as a starting point, but more to be revealed in the coming days on this
▪ Macron’s reasoning is that the Haute-Savoie region in the French Alps has been hit with the highest number of virus infections per 100,000 people in the entire country, followed by the neighbouring Savoie region: both contain the majority of French ski areas. Health authorities feared regional hospitals could be saturated quickly if crowds of skiers from France and abroad were allowed to travel to those regions

▪ "Obviously we really want a reopening, but not at the cost of endangering public health," said Jean-Luc Boch, president of the ANMSM association of mountain resort mayors
▪ This news is a huge blow to the ski industry. In France alone, there are 350 ski resorts employing 120,000 people during the high season and generating an estimated 10 billion euros ($11.9 billion) of income each year
▪ Switzerland is not obligated to follow it’s European-Union-tied neighbours of Italy, France or Austria and may choose to open its resorts early. Swiss president Simonetta Sommaruga is expected to announce news of the Swiss ski resort opening dates tonight (Wednesday 25th Nov 2020)
▪ Intersport have committed to doing everything we can to have our shops open, and complying to all health protocols (sanitising gel available to all, masks obligatory in all our shops and distributed for free to our customers, we sanitise and service all your ski or snowboarding equipment, we have a no-quibble cancellation policy, and we have an amazing customer service team)
