Völkl – Mantra
The 2015 Ski of the Year is still the one we measure all others up against. We’d call the Mantras a safe bet, but that’s too bland for a ski which has defined all-mountain high performance for a decade and continues in this latest iteration. The current rockered platform delivers one of the best blends of fun and performance ever made, and the scramble to test them remains as sharp-elbowed as ever. We’ll direct you to some comments from last season to remind you why it’s still setting the pace: “With its new-found flickability sitting on top of a rock-solid charging platform, the Mantra defines what a proper ski can do. By now you’ll have seen online video of it cranked right to the edges on hardpack, defying its Freeride category yet at the same time defining what a good freeride ski has to do to be in the game.” Our crop of narrow-waisted testers – as in those who prefer sub-90mm skis rather than those who wear corsets – still head to the Mantra to fine tune their legs for freeride sessions.
