Salomon – QST 99
Fast, grippy, powerful, springy and something of a departure for Salomon. The acknowledged experts of the ‘it’ll ski to please straight out of the box’ have delivered a ski that needs work to get it to deliver. And we like that. The 85, 115 and this 99 models all lit our collective lamp with super-punchy tails and rock-solid stability, with the 99 being maybe just the pick because of the way the width worked wherever we took it. There’s a lot of different construction in the QST series, with lay-ups of milled wood and full-width metal – no wonder the edge grip is up there with performance piste skis. Where the Rocker series are bouncy, slightly mad and freestyle-like in their performance, the QSTs are potent chargers which feel better as the speed builds. The tech keeps the weight down for the performance delivered; around half a kilo down on comparable rivals – you could take these day touring with no compromise (and be ready to poach the first line).
