K2 – Luv Boat 105
One look at the curves and deliciously elongated tip on the Luv Boats tells you what they’re all about: powder. They’re a ski designed to make the good days even better, but with a surprisingly wide-open performance they now make even more of those good days better. In powder they do what they say on the tin. Generous tip rocker keeps you afloat when others are in need of a snorkel; tail rocker and taper at both ends gives you the freedom to turn where and how you want to, from big GS slarves for maximum powder spraying to lightning-quick pivots and slashes when the trees start getting too tight for comfort. The fun doesn’t stop when the powder runs out though. K2 have endowed the Luv Boats with something called ‘Bioflex Nanolite Konic’ technology; it’s a bit of a mouthful, but what it means is they’ve used lightweight woods for the central part of the core with heavier-duty Aspen and Paulownia along the edges, and then reinforced it with aerospace-grade composites, tri-axial fibreglass and just enough metal. Basically this means that while the Luv Boats feel light and poppy, they have plenty of guts and are fully capable of putting that power down on snow. Motoring through soft chop is a joy, moguls feel like a playground, slush feels like powder all over again, and even railing the pistes back to the lifts is fun as long as they’re soft enough to get an edge in.
