11 photos that prove winter is coming

The 23 September might be the official start autumn, but in the Alps things looked wintery, with up to 50cm of snow hitting Austria

1. Hintertux, Austria

 

The Austrian glacier resort clocked in some of the largest amounts of snow: a whopping 50cm. And the best bit? It’s already skiable, with 18km of runs open.

2. Stubai, Austria

 

A couple of valleys over, the Stubai glacier recorded 40cm of the stuff, just in time for their season opening on the 25 September. Time to look for some last-minute flights?

3. Schlick 2000, Austria

 

To prove it’s not just glaciers that got hit: Here’s the small resort of Schlick 2000, also in the Stubai Valley, where lifts are still open for summer hiking…

4. Engelberg, Switzerland

 

It’s not just Austria. Over in Engelberg the higher slopes boast a nice coating.

5. Verbier, Switzerland

In Verbier the snow line sits just above the village.

6. Val Thorens, France

 

To France, where Val Thorens, the highest resort in Europe, is looking snowy enough to send Eddard Stark into hibernation.

7. Chamonix, France

 

In Chamonix, things are looking pretty autumnal on the valley floor, but at 2000m… not so much!

8. Funivie Folgarida Marilleva, Italy

 

The webcam from the Dolomite resort of Funivie Folgarida Marilleva looks like it came straight out of January.

9. Obergurgl, Austria

Back in Austria, the snow reached the valley floor in Obergurgl, one of the first non glacier resorts to open each season.

10. Gastein, Austria

Further east, in the Gasteinertal, there’s snow in the villages of Bad Gastein (1002m) and Bad Hofgastein (849m).

11. St Anton am Arlberg, Austria
