It’s summer (apparently) and despite one of the most epic seasons ever, with skiing in Scotland right into May, we’re already chomping at the bit to get ourselves back onto the mountain. So we’ve hunted down the best summer ski resorts; from long-haul powder and southern gems right through to summer glaciers. Who say’s we have to wait until December for our next snow-fix? North American backcountry Thompson Pass, Alaska When? Now until late June

Train v plane v car More skiers than ever* are using their cars to get away. Anyone who experienced the volcanic delays a couple of winters ago wouldn’t take much to tip them into alternative transport, but the train has also seen a boost in travel. Dickie experiments with all forms of travel to assess qualitative and quantative reasons for choosing your route to the mountains. *Actually true, as opposed to journalistic cobblers. Ferry companies all report at least 10% increase in traffic during key ski season months, some significantly more.

Oh how we can hate this time of year, with the sun-shining and threatening to obliterate every tiny bit of snow on our blessed mountain tops. But this year, after an early warm spell, we seem to have been blasted straight back into winter. So while the rest of Europe moans about the wet weather, us skiers are singing praises to the snow-gods for extending the ski season that little bit further…. Yes bawbags is a humorous Scottish euphemism for men’s goolies. But it’s also the name of a rather brilliant underpants brand – they’re the Calvin Kleins of the freeski world (but with much brighter colours and wackyprints), worn by the likes of James ‘Woodsy’ Woods and Dan Wakeham.
