Avoriaz (Les Portes du Soleil), France

The resort is one of the crossing points in the massive Portes du Soleil

Avoriaz is a purpose built ski resort in France. Whether or not you like the look of this place it is certainly iconic. The tall apartments, where most visitors will stay, are crafted to mimic the rock face on which it sits and create an impressive backdrop.

Avoriaz is one of the crossing points in the Portes du Soleil and the departure point for anyone looking for the longest pistes.

Avoriaz offers 153km of piste alone and it some of the highest altitude skiing available in the Portes du Soleil (up to approx 2400m). It means if warm weather is affecting some of the nearby resorts your best bet will be Avoriaz. It is also the most famous/established/commerical of the resorts in the Portes du Soleil meaning that it attracts quite a crowd. In terms of terrain the resort offers up a little bit of everything; trees, big cliff drops, powder bowls and easy, wide flats are all in the mix.

The Lindarets area is accessible for any level and offers fun runs off-piste, while Avoriaz’s Mossets bowl is ripe for intermediates and up.

A couple of season’s ago, Avoriaz brought to Europe a new generation of 100% natural snow playgrounds with The Stash.

The Stash represents a new concept in snowparks imported from the Californian resort of North Star. It was developed by snowboard legend Jake Burton and consists of a piste with a mix of log jibs, pow stashes, high speed turns, jumps and drops, all mixed up so you can run it plenty of times without the same feel.
