From the moment these two ski resorts in the mid-Zillertal combined, awards have been rolling in.
‘Hoch’ means ‘high’ in German, and the resorts are at the perfect altitude (1500 metres to 2100 metres) to assure sufficient snow coverage over the course of the season.
The views are spectacular, with 166 kilometres of runs in total, comprising plenty for all abilities but best for intermediates (and the Hochzillertal has improved its park facilities in the last season).
The variety of the terrain assures opportunities for cross-country skiing and freeriding, while night skiing is an option from mid-December on the downhill run in Kaltenbach from 7pm, and in Hochfuegen on Thursdays, from 8pm until 10pm.
Local restaurants here are superb for traditional Austrian dishes – checkout Restaurant Alexander, which has been awarded more culinary rewards than you can shake a ski pole at.
