Tim Durtschi takes third at Red Bull Linecatcher 2011

The Red Bull Linecatcher is truly a unique event. It is set on a big mountain face, the infamous site of the Mad Masters in Vars in the Southern French Alps and it gathers the world’s best backcountry skiers to show their freestyle skills on a mix of natural and man-made features.

Despite the generally low snow cover in the Alps this season, the spectacular Eyssina bowl of Vars offered good powder on a stable base and the world’s best riders took advantage of it.

Many of freeskiing’s biggest stars exhibited a performance level that otherwise can only be seen in the highlights of the biggest ski movie productions. Everybody had three takes on the challenging course with the best score defining the final results. When all cliffs were dropped and the snow smoke had settled it was Canadian wonder kid Sean Pettit who topped the podium in front of Italian surprise Markus Eder, and Tim Durtschi grabbed third. Tim’s fellow American and teammate on the ATOMIC Freeski Team, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, placed fourth.

Tim Durtschi was Mr. Consistency at the Red Bull Linecatcher this year. He had not the slightest problem in any of his three runs despite taking huge drops and throwing several technical tricks.

“I took it a bit easy in the beginning to build up confidence, and then I went for it,” explained the humble American. His final run consisted of a 180° over a little drop to a Switch 540° on the upper-most take-off, a perfect Rodeo 360° on the biggest step down jump of the whole face and a clean 360° over a floater at the bottom. An impressive performance that was only topped twice and should make everyone look forward to more stunning displays of Tim Durtschi’s great backcountry skills in the best ski videos of next season.
