The reception raised over £6000 for Snow-Camp through its auction and raffle, with prizes donated by Warren Smith Ski Academy, Manfield Limited, New Generation, Pierre & Vacances, Ben Kilner, Jenny Jones, SNO!zone, Ellis Brigham, Salomon, Freeride, Vos Media, X in the City and WIPE-OUT.
Warren Smith, internationally renowned in the world of skiing as a leading British freeskier skier and a keen supporter of Snow-Camp, who donated a place on one of his Ski Academy’s 5-Day courses said: “I’ve been a supporter of Snow-Camp and everything they have achieved since the charity’s early days. It’s vital that these kind of charities get the support of the snow sports industry and beyond. I myself came from a background that would not normally get involved in skiing, thank god for Hemel ski slope! It would be great to see in the future a whole line of people getting involved in not just snow sports but the UK snow sport industry, who came from the Snow-Camp concept.”
Building on the success of the first Everest Challenge which raised £35,000 in January 2010, Snow-Camp is raising the stakes with the Everest Challenge 2011 which will be held 27th January – 30th January 2011 in Portes du Soleil, France, spanning 15 resorts. Snow-Camp is running the event in association with Base Camp, the adventure training specialists.
The 150km endurance event gives snow sport enthusiasts the opportunity to fundraise for Snow-Camp by doing something they love to do, skiing or snowboarding, but like they have never done before. Participants, which Snow-Camp hope will exceed 60 people, will be guided through a range of peaks and valleys, hitting one slope after another, including a night ski/board session and a night mountain hike.
Elaine France, Snow-Camp’s Commercial Manager, is clear about the challenge ahead, “It’s going to be an incredible event, with skiing and boarding from dawn until dusk! We’ll finish the challenge no matter what the weather or the conditions. It’s going to be even more demanding and fun than the first Everest Challenge.”
Snow-Camp Director, Dan Charlish, comments:
“Events like the Everest Challenge are becoming increasingly important in supporting the growing work of Snow-Camp. They enable us to expand the programmes we run by raising much needed funds and also introduce the charity to a whole new group of future supporters and their friends. At the same time participants have an experience they will never forget in the mountains - enjoying the challenge before them, meeting like minded snowsports enthusiasts and making a real difference for young people through their efforts.”
Base Camp Director, Fergie Miller, comments:
“Base Camp is really excited to work with Snow Camp on the Everest Challenge. We’ve been a supporter of Snow Camp for some time and after sponsoring the Snowball Rally last year are excited to be working even more closely with Snow Camp. From our involvement with the Ghana Ski Team and having run ski & snowboard instructor courses for many years, we are big believers in the role adventure sports can play in personal development. We encourage everyone in the City to support what is a fantastic charity.”
The Everest Challenge is open to all competent “red slope” skiers and snowboarders. It costs only £185 to book a place on the event (including flights, accommodation, transfers and ski passes). All participants commit to raise a minimum of £1,500 for Snow-Camp’s work.
