Finally, on Saturday his status was also supported by silverware at the X Games in Aspen, the most important freestyle event on our planet: The Australian finished second in slopestyle!
The X Games in Aspen are the most anticipated event of the freestyle season, especially for one skier, Russ Henshaw. The Australian had entered the X Games competition as a favourite several times, but so far had failed to bring home any silverware.
This year, at his third showing in Aspen, it would be his time to succeed!
The 2010/11 season has been a strange one, though, for Russ Henshaw. The Marker Völkl team rider has had several great performances in qualifying heats, but somehow the final runs never went his way. The X Games slopestyle seemed like a deja-vu. Again, the Australian dominated the qualification heat with his unrivalled air prowess. But when the finals took off under sunny blue skies on Saturday afternoon in Aspen, it was someone else who layed down the first marker. Sammy Carlson slew the jib section of the course with an incredible array of tricks and landed a different double on each of the three jumps. The American took a commanding lead and seemed to be unbeatable early on.
This time, however, Henshaw managed to withstand the pressure. He followed suit with a great first run, comfortably cruising through the jib section with stylish manoeuvres and once again ruling the kicker section with a leftside double cork 1260°, switch double cork 900° and an incredible rightside double cork 1260°. It was not quite enough to surpass Sammy Carlson, due to his outstanding jib performance, but Henshaw’s run withstood all other competition. There was only one moment late in the third round, when Norwegian Andreas Håtveit came close into third position, but in the end the first podium appearance of Russ Henshaw at the X Games became reality. A well deserved success for the 20-year-old that finally and firmly establishes him among the greatest personalities of the sport.
