Once more the Challenge has achieved its hope of discovering new talent and changing lives. The sought-after prize remains the coveted award of a two-year pro-rider contract with The North Face and Atomic. It has given a new perspective to the best skiers in Europe, giving many the possibility to take their ski careers to the next level both in freeride and freestyle. Lukas won the overall title after an outstanding and 'unreal' performance in the park. Originally from Stockholm, Lukas now lives in the very north of Sweden, and after nearly missing the Swedish qualifying event after forgetting his insurance papers, his surprise success means that he will not forget this incredible experience.
Now in its 4th year, The North Face Ski Challenge is an international competition dedicated to young European freeskiers. Not merely another freestyle or freeride event, it is a unique opportunity for young riders to demonstrate their skills, to learn, to be supported and to reach to the next level. The motivation of the Challenge is to inspire and to encourage, enabling our youth to ‘discover’ themselves and to live the philosophy behind The North Face - to ‘never stop exploring’.
The North Face Ski Challenge is arguably the most important competition for younger skiers hoping to break into the circuit. The event promotes all-mountain skiing with each participant competing in both big-mountain freeride contests and park and pipe freestyle contests. The Challenge also places an important emphasis on avalanche awareness, snow and mountain safety. With a pan-European qualifying tour to find the best talents the competition is of the highest quality and the finals brought big surprises and lively debate.
Lukas becomes the second Swede to win the overall King's title after Tom Oliver Hedvall in 2008. Tom has since been competing on the world circuit and involved with various projects with The North Face such as filming with Free Radicals. These are just some of the opportunities and possibilities that lie ahead for Lukas. Amazed and in shock after his unexpected victory Lukas couldn't believe his fortune - "a photo shoot with The North Face and Atomic?! New gear?! Clothes, skis, boots … a travel budget …. ?! Skiing with pro riders from The North Face?!".
The Emperors category, introduced for the first time this year, saw talented riders aged between 19-20 compete. UK wildcard entrant, Chris Benner from Biggleswade, held his own against some stiff competition from across Europe scoring an impressive 28 points and finishing ahead of competition from Norway, Hungary and Poland.
