Last weekend skiing was hit with a tragedy when freeski pioneer Jamie Pierre was killed in an avalanche at Snowbird, USA. He was 38 years old and leaves behind a wife and two children.
Jamie had been snowboarding with a friend in an unopened part of Snowbird resort, the South Chutes area. During normal season opening times the area would be in-bounds but as the ski area was closed none of the slopes had been prepared by avalanche control.
The accident happened during the afternoon on Sunday 13th November 2011 and Jamie was not fully buried. The Utah Avalanche Center reported 12 other avalanches, set off by people, on the same day.
Jamie had set a world record in for the biggest cliff jump in 2006 when he jumped a 255-foot cliff at Grand Targhee. He was well known to the entire ski industry and had filmed with many of the best production companies.
Jamie was a regular fixture in Fall-Line Skiing & Snowboarding magazine and his antics will be sorely missed. Heart felt condolences go out to his family and friends from everyone at Fall-Line. Read a tribute from Richard Fincher.
