Polartec Neoshell wins Fall-Line's 'Innovation of the Year' award

Yes people, the votes have been counted and we can reveal that Polartec Neoshell has won Fall-Line's first-ever Innovation Of The Year award!

If you picked up a copy of issue 99, you'll know all about our new award - and, hopefully, you did just as we very kindly asked and went online to place your vote. We were astounded by the number of you who did - it seems we're not the only ones who think there's some pretty innovative kit out this year.

Also in the running for the award was the Snowpulse Removable Airbag System, Fischer Vacuum Fit boot, Salomon BBR and Gore-Tex Active Shell. But it was Polartec's brand new Neoshell fabric that bagged it. Here's a reminder about why it's so good:

Polartec say: The first truly breathable, fully waterproof, temperature regulating fabric ever. While traditional shell fabrics require heat and pressure to build inside the garment before the membrane begins to work, Polartec NeoShell breathes actively, thanks to an exclusive sub-micron fibre membrane with unprecedented air permeability. Under a microscope, the permeable layer looks like spiderwebs spun from a polyurethane thread. The webs form tiny channels large enough that humid air can escape but small enough that water droplets can't get in.

We say: We haven't the foggiest what an 'exclusive sub-micron fibre membrane' is. But, we do know that waterproof technology has remained pretty much the same since the very first hard shell. Breathability is achieved through diffusion: moisture and heat create enough pressure that moisture vapour finally passes through the fabric. Soft shells trade waterproofness for greater breathability by making use of convection: a constant exchange of air allows more moisture vapour to escape. With NeoShell, Polartec manages to deliver the best of both features. Its “active” membrane ensures maximum breathability without compromising on water or windproofing – it's fully waterproof and blocks 99.9% of the wind. Hallelujah! On top of that, Polartec NeoShell is available in a range of designs and styles, through brands including Mammut, Marmot, Rab and The North Face.

Congratulations Polartec!
