British Winter Olympic Team facing cash crisis

As if competing at the Olympics wasn't stressful enough the UK atheletes have the added pressure of knowing that their governing body is potentially facing administration.

Thankfully the International Olympic committee have made assurances that the atheletes themselves will not have their places jeaopordised by the financial state of the British Ski and Snowsport Federation.

Apparently things started going awry for Snowports GB last spring – many of the atheletes had their funding cut and in some cases even had to fund their own Olympic journies after the BSSF ran up a £600,000 debt.

In relation to news reports concerning Snowsport GB, BOA Chief Executive Andy Hunt said:??“We are fully aware of the situation and have been briefed on the steps being taken by Snowsport GB to remedy the financial shortfall.

“The BOA’s absolute priority is to do everything possible to ensure that the athletes are able to compete in the Vancouver Games as members of Team GB.  We have developed a contingency plan and, should it become necessary to do so, will submit it to our Board for consideration.? ?“We are in communication with the relevant team leaders and officials to reassure them that we are monitoring the situation closely and are doing everything we can to support them.”

Many competitors had funding cut as far back at the spring when Snowsport GB first started encountering problem. See Zoe Gillings' interview from Document 61.

It is not a great position for the national team that will be representing the UK at the Winter Olympics and in complete contrast to the money being poured into London's bid to hold the 2012 Olympics.
