A few welcome clouds cooled the sunburnt crowd and helped keep the kickers in pristine condition at one of the most popular events of the BRITS week – the Giro Freeski Big Air Championship. Anticipation was high and the riders were primed to push themselves to the next level. And step it up they did. Showing us the face of things to come, 12 year-old Chris McCormick laid down a 1260, and Cal Sandieson, also 12, answered back with a switch 1080. And just when the crowd thought it couldn’t get any better, 14 year-old Tyler Harding impressed with a corked 1080 – and that was just the juniors!
Katie Summerhayes took home gold for the third consecutive year, throwing down a huge switch 540 and an even bigger switch 900 off the big kicker, proving she’s up there in the world’s elite. Sissy Herant stepped up to the big jump and threw a floaty 540 to take second, while Molly Summerhayes laid down a 900 and a 720 for her two scored runs on the smaller kicker to take third.
Katie Summerhayes said: “I’m stoked, so happy. I definitely tried to step up from last year and I learnt a new trick today in the competition so I’m really happy.”
In the men’s, there were no surprises to see X-Games Champion James Woods leading the proceedings, bagging himself another gold for his near-perfect double cork 1260 high mute and a super-tweaked switch corked 900. Murray Buchan took second place with a switch 9 tail and a switch 1080 tail, narrowly beating Hector Barbour, who looked like he was going to take second place with a double 1080 Japan on his first jump, but just missed out when he caught the knuckle on his second jump, a corked 7 nose.
James Woods said: “I’m pretty psyched; it’s great to come away and be British champion. There has been an incredible vibe going round this week.”
