Around the world in 90 seconds

It's the whole world crammed into a mere 90 seconds...

Things to do...

Kicking off tonight at SNO!zone Scotland is the first of the Project Friday sessions, and tomorrow night FBBB are rocking into Tamworth to slay the SnowDome. Next weekend the industrious folk at SNO!zone Scotland are running the now annual Kelvingrove Park Sessions and coming up towards the end of the summer we're gonna see the return of the Westbeach Snowflex Freestyle Series. And if Scotland's your thing, there's even a bit of snow at CairnGorm.

From around the world...

New Zealand's original snowboard mag (New Zealand Snowboarder) has just released the magazine online free to view for the first time... Since 1993 they have been telling it how it is down in the 'land of the long white cloud'.

Denver, Colorado will be home to the first ever International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup snowboard big air. “Some of the steps taken by the respective FIS tour managers in adding new events and sites are positive moves to grow the marketability of our sports,” said USSA Vice President, Athletics Luke Bodensteiner. “Our U.S. World Cups provide an opportunity for us to enhance exposure for the many U.S. athletes who won medals in Vancouver.”

Ski adventurer Fredrik Ericcson has arrived at Base Camp for his ascent and descent of K2. Although he didn't get a shot at the real deal two days ago, he did get to slam down 45 degrees for the lovely Laila Peak.

The second ever European Winter X Games has had its dates announced, it will be striking a pose from 16-18 March 2011 in Tignes, France (again). Appartently the inaugural event this March attracted 66,200 visitors.

There's a new Swatch TTR 3Star event in Australia this July. The Mountain Dew Hut Jam will be held at Mt Buller on 31 July. “The Dew Hut Jam is a new concept for an event in Australia, with solid prize money ($19,000 ) and the team element where riders have to work together and stomp their tricks to win.” says Mountain Dew snow event curator Russell Holt.

From 2-4 July (next weekend) Les 2 Alpes will be holding the Kumi Yama, an annual freestyle showdown on the glacier with a distinctly Oriental theme. Brit David Graham has been shredding the comp for years and reckons it kicks ass.

Venture's Zephyr splitboard has received the prestigious Editors' Choice Award from Backcountry Magazine.  This year's annual product test was held at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, where a selection of boards from top manufacturers were put through their paces both on piste and off.  When the powder cloud settled, Venture's Zephyr Splitboard emerged as a top cat.

UK news...

Mountain Dew has launched a new drink in the UK following a petition from thousands of fans?! The hosts of the uber successful Dew Tour in the States have even set up a facebook page dedicated to their new drink with particularly enthusiastic drinkers extolling the benefits of this new fizzy number. Apparently it's got more caffeine than in other territories, something specifically orchestrated for the UK consumer, who might like, 'that extra kick'.

First reports from the office are, "Frightening colour, better tasting than some other ones though".

Following the maintenance work at Chill Factore, Chief Exec, Stephen Evans has issued a new statement:

As many of our regular guests will know, in order to carry out essential maintenance work both on and under the main slope this summer, we have, unfortunately, been unable to put out a freestyle park over the past six weeks.

“We fully recognise the disappointment this has caused our freestyle guests and are looking forward to re-introducing the freestyle park as soon as possible.  In the interim we have introduced three rookie freestyle features every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, for our freestyle guests to use.  These will be open throughout the day, however, may be closed periodically to re-shape.  Due to the ongoing work under the slope, we are currently unable to build any additional freestyle features than this.

“We estimate that the maintenance work will be fully complete by mid August. This will see the return of freestyle nights to Chill Factore and a host of freestyle events over the coming months.

“We sincerely apologise for the disruption to our freestyle offering this summer and look forward to returning with an even stronger freestyle set up, including new and exciting features.  This essential work has been carried out to accommodate a new tenant in the 25,000 sq ft unit underneath the slope, which is due to open in late 2010.”

HU AM I? TEASER is the second cinematic installment from Mellow Parks who are representing the bubbling Chinese freestyle scene. Most of the footage is from their park in Nanshan but it's cool to see a new scene emerging.

And there's this little bitty from Airblaster, Respect Your Elders, maybe you wanna watch it...
