And The Winner Is: Tim Durtschi!

The “Powder Video Awards” are the equivalent of an X Games gold medal for all freeski pros who don't compete.

This year one skier stood out from the circle of famed prize winners by claiming two awards at once: Tim Durtschi.

His team mate in the ATOMIC Freeskiing Team, Daron Rahlves, was honoured for “Best Line”. When the ski world congregates in Aspen end of January, it's not only the competition scene that gathers for the X Games. There are also plenty of movie athletes who come to party – and because they await the results of the coveted “Powder Video Awards”.

The “PVA”, elected every year by a highly ranked panel of experts upon the performances shown in current ski movies, are the “Oscars” of freeskiing. And as the “Oscar night” is the big highlight for real movie stars in
Hollywood, the “Powder Video Awards presentation“ in Aspen is a night to remember for everyone in the ski business.

The kudos coming from a Powder Video Award for a pro skier is priceless, and of course the fame doubles when one wins two awards at a time. The only skier to collect two awards this year was Tim Durtschi. His outstanding final segment of Poorboyz' “Everyday Is A Saturday” earned him “Best Jib” and “Best Manmade Air”, two categories that cover the whole range of freestyle within the PVA. As unlikely it is that one skier wins both these awards, the well deserved it is for the congenial west coast boy. You have to see his “backflip to inverted tree bonk” to even imagine his inventive jib performance, and Tim Durtschi's double flip over infamous “Pyramid Gap” is already legendary. The ATOMIC team rider really is the most outstanding
freestyle skier displayed in this season's ski videos.

But of course, there are more categories than these two at the PVA. The most important one is likely “Movie Of The Year”, which went to Matchstick Productions' “In Deep”. Therefore it comes as no surprise that some Powder Video Awards were also conferred to this movie's impressive cast. Daron Rahlves took home the trophy for “Best Line”. His straight line down a massive AK face even dwarfed the famous Kitzbühel downhill course. Mark Abma got “Best Natural Air” and Sean Pettit was awarded with “Best Male Performance”. The price for “Best Female Performance” went to Lynsey Dyer for her part in “Magic Moments” by Stormshow Studios.

The party following the ceremony was insane. Tim Durtschi tried everything to celebrate both his awards in appropriate style and even Daron Rahlves was seen around for quite a while even though he had to compete in the X Games' SkierX the next day. But a Powder Video Award simply demands attention, because it is there to stay for long. Just like an Oscar.
