DALBELLO
VIRUS £400
There are three versions of the Virus - this is the Free; we're currently testing the lime green Tour, and there's the Tour Lite (also green). All have TLT-compatible soles, which means they fit into lightweight Dynafit-style bindings. The clever bit here is the walk mode which includes a clip on the tongue so you can flick the rear switch, pop the front clip and walk without undoing the top buckle, which makes using the boot with crampons easier.
The sole doesn't have as much roll on it as other touring boots we've tried, so walking on firm surfaces isn't quite as smooth as in some other boots. Mind you, this is only really strolling around town - once you're in snow you don't notice. What it does have is a very strong tongue and therefore robust downhill performance.
Shell fit is quite voluminous for a touring boot too, with good space over the instep which can be cranked down with the second buckle. Three buckles and no power strap makes for a very easy and quick bot to get in and out of, even if it's been left out overnight.
Interesting and worth a look.
