Just in case you hadn't heard, its finally snowing here in Chamonix. I've just heard a local report that it's in fact knee deep at the base of the Grand Montets! Down here in Les Bossons we have a good 25cm's and its still snowing. The forecast is for more heavy snowfalls later today!

Oh and as this is the 'Ask the experts' forum here's your question:

How deep is deep!

Go Europe! At last. Was in Alberta 10 days ago and they've got great conditions, so were crowing... a lot! This will even things up. More pow soon, I hope.

Re: Its snowing alright!

After a short break to let us have a few powder turns at the weekend the storm is back and building for a stormy weekend start to the winter season. Chamonix is due to open this coming weekend, but it look's like only the hard-core few who will be out braving the elements to search out a few turns in the trees. The avalanche risk is also on the way up the - currently 2-3 increasing with altitude. I expect to see this increase further as the week progresses with more snowfalls and high winds forecast. Play safe!

The biggest storm since the Bizzard of Ahhhs!

Fresh from Chamonix: just five minutes ago, Dickie's brother Ollie was almost speechless down the phone about the snow building up.

Ollie did three seasons in Chamonix about 20 years ago, just after the storm of storms that set the town on a fresh wave of international stardom and built its reputation as the home of free skiing with Plake, Schmidt, Hattrup et al in the seminal movie.

"I haven't seen the valley like this since I've been coming here", Ollie managed. "The runs are barely open because the amount coming down is so relentless."

"Anyone coming for Christmas is going to have a week they won't believe. We're being stopped from heading up apart from the Bochard on Grands Montets, but there are a couple of clear days coming through before it's supposed to start coming in again at the weekend."

Any tips?

"Fat skis and snow chains. You won't get a car anywhere without chains. They can only just keep the main routes open."

See, all we had to do was wait...

In Puy Saint Vincent at the moment and great conditions.

Last 3 days had good off piste and fresh tracks with a few short hikes.

Today good piste conditions and blue bird.
