The first time I visited Fernie, it felt a bit like a ghost town
All the shops seemed to be closed, there was hardly anyone in the streets, only huge snowbanks on each side of the highway, which carried a steady stream of cars towards the ski hill.
We carried on along our journey to the ski hill, and found that every member of the skiing community was up there – it was as though the whole town had shut down for the morning to get fresh tracks.
When we moved here, someone finally explained to us that most of Fernie’s tourism-based businesses have a powder day rule in place – if it snows more than 20 cm in town overnight, the staff get to come to work late.
It kind of makes sense – there won’t be much passing trade if all the winter visitors are gunning for fresh tracks, and you have to be a pretty devoted worker to stay focused on the job when you know there is fresh pow to be had ten minutes up the road.
So if you ever end up looking for work in Fernie, make sure you get a powder day rule written into your contract to avoid being the sad face stuck in work as everyone else rides the pow!
