Bormio, day two

Joe Tyler gettin' in the zone

We've just finished another epic day in the Italian resort of Bormio. I'd never heard of the place before last year and obviously thought it would be rubbish but it is actually really damn good.

The terrain is high enough to have loads of snow coverage, although you can get down into the trees where the untracked pow has stayed soft and unbaked by the sun. But the pistes are an amazing shape. From super steep pitches that you can blast they all seem to mellow out into giant rollers (just before it all goes pear-shaped and you catch an edge of death).

The park looks a bit pants compared to the tales I've heard of Livigno's park (just up the road) but it caters really well for beginner / intermediate riders. They have two big (18m) table top jumps but next to these are 8m offerings, with no wedge and super smooth transitions. Definitely the perfect type of jump to progress on. Speed is easy and if you do catch the knuckle it should be a little forgiving. The rails and boxes are ok, although loads have ride-on entries. We've seen a pipe dragon hacking away at the pipe but as yet there's not a great amount to show for its efforts.

It's probably not the kind of resort to go to if you want to have the buzz of 'covering ground' but there's definitely enough on offer to keep most snowboarders entertained for a week. It's the kind of riding where you'll find yourself lapping the same runs over and over again working the hits and searching out new ones.

There's some sick backcountry too, some really accessible easy rolling stuff and some pretty hectic faces that would need a good hike. The status of what you're allowed to ride though is very ambiguous. I haven't yet seen a sign that says you can't ride anywhere but there have been reports of the Polizei fining intrepid skiers €50 on the spot when they catch people off -piste. Other more mellow reports are that you only get fined if you're not packing the basics of beeper, shovel and probe. We'll try and find out the official line and add it here then.

The sun has finally been smothered by an incoming storm so it looks like tomorrow is going to be tricky, we'll try and do something interesting to tell you about then.
