Would I let the train take the strain? Yeah right...

Dickie FincherTue, 17/04/2012 - 8:16pm
Train v plane v car More skiers than ever* are using their cars to get away. Anyone who experienced the volcanic delays a couple of winters ago wouldn’t take much to tip them into alternative transport, but the train has also seen a boost in travel. Dickie experiments with all forms of travel to assess qualitative and quantative reasons for choosing your route to the mountains. *Actually true, as opposed to journalistic cobblers. Ferry companies all report at least 10% increase in traffic during key ski season months, some significantly more.

Skiing Mickey's Ears, Tignes

Simon AshtonTue, 03/04/2012 - 10:21am
I've recently returned from the Family trip to Tignes, nicely planned to coincide with X Games to cheer on the British riders. Now I would certainly describe myself as competent and as I’ve said in the past it makes it difficult to find friends of comparable ability to ski with.

Tignes Winter X Games 2012

Simon AshtonTue, 03/04/2012 - 9:46am
I went to Tignes for Euro X Games 2012, in essence a busman’s holiday – both family ski trip and supporting British athletes at X Games in the Slope-style events. It was the perfect week to showcase both Freeski and Tignes itself as the resort basked in sunshine each and every day, support lined every venue to watch their favourites slugging it out like modern day gladiators. This was probably the first time many holiday skiers would’ve seen slope-style or pipe and I’m sure they are now converts.

The hard stuff makes me stronger

Dickie FincherWed, 15/02/2012 - 10:21pm
There I was, just the other day, on the wrong side of an Alp to get all that snow. I'd packed my 193 free ride super-stiffies in anticipation of exhausting myself with a day's powder. As it was, we managed about four inches of snow all week so I was left to prove that my overtly manly planks were up to the job of scurrying about on the piste.

First Few Days Skiing

Josh BirchWed, 08/02/2012 - 6:14pm
I’ve had an awesome few days on the hill so far. On Saturday I went over to Keystone with all the GB slope riders and had a fun day hitting their jumps. I prefer Breckenridge jumps to Keystone jumps, but on the weekend Keystone tends to be quieter so its good to shred over there every once in a while.

Arrived In Breck

Josh BirchMon, 06/02/2012 - 10:35am
I had a long day of travelling yesterday and I’m so glad to be here in Breckenridge now, think I counted 20 hours of travelling. It’s snowed a lot since I last got here which makes a change, very excited to go skiing later on. Managed to fight the jet lag fairly well by not sleeping on the plane too :) Massive thanks to coach Tanya for picking me up from the airport :) Next blogs will have some pictures of how the parks are since I was last here! Stoked!

After such a great NZ trip last year...

Vincent RaynerTue, 24/01/2012 - 12:19pm
After such a great NZ trip last year I had high hopes for the up and coming winter in Verbier, Switzerland, and so far over the last two months I have been far from disappointed!! The snow has been falling, the conditions have been holding well and the riding has been up to a new level.

Sarah Burke - Obituary

Simon AshtonMon, 23/01/2012 - 4:44pm
The outpouring of condolences from the freeskiing community is just one illustration of how well respected and revered Sarah Burke was. She was there at the start of Ski Halfpipe and has been one of, if not the strongest ambassador of the sport since its inception. A great winner and gracious in defeat she was the epitome of how we want our heroes to be.

Kuhtai mini break

Simon AshtonTue, 17/01/2012 - 1:14pm
When the massive snow storm hit the Alps at the beginning of January panic began to set in: would it affect the Youth Olympic Games, would we still be able to get to our resort and would there be any fresh snow left (i.e. untracked freshies to play in) by the time we got there.

The skis are on the Aga...

Dickie FincherSun, 15/01/2012 - 10:13pm
It's time. I'm off in 12 hours and the final tweaks are being made. The snow is ok in Val Gardena, but not epic. That's fine. I'm still going skiing. Is there much off piste available? Still not sure, and I won't have a first hand report until I'm well on the way to Gatwick. So there are two pairs going into the bag, just in case. The Scotts are on the Aga because my waxing iron has bust and I just want to give them a too-late freshen up, and the Heads are box fresh and ready to scream.
