The outpouring of condolences from the freeskiing community is just one illustration of how well respected and revered Sarah Burke was. She was there at the start of Ski Halfpipe and has been one of, if not the strongest ambassador of the sport since its inception. A great winner and gracious in defeat she was the epitome of how we want our heroes to be.

When the massive snow storm hit the Alps at the beginning of January panic began to set in: would it affect the Youth Olympic Games, would we still be able to get to our resort and would there be any fresh snow left (i.e. untracked freshies to play in) by the time we got there. 
 

Huge snowfalls in the Alps

What a change in 48 hours! The long awaited snowfalls in the Alps began last weekend and have gathered pace with the biggest yet reported over the past 24 hours (to 8th Dec) with some of the biggest accumulations including 60cm in 24 hours at Meribel and 70cm in 24 hours at both Les Arcs and St Anton.

After two months with less than two dozen ski areas open in the northern hemisphere, the past few days have seen the 2011-12 ski season really take off with the first non-glacier ski areas open following heavy snowfalls in North America and more ski areas opening in the Alps. Over the next month hundreds of ski resorts will open for winter 2011-12.

Over the past two weeks the competition season has really taken off in New Zealand. We had the K2 Chill Series Big Mountain which was a four-day, 2Star Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) held at Craigieburn and Mount Olympus ski fields last week
